A PRIVATE FAMILY PENTHOUSE ATOP A MODERNIST CAMBEN BUILDING NESTLED IN THE HEART OF CAMDEN TOWN

This Camden Penthouse is a carefully considered response to not only the client’s brief, but also the striking architecture of the existing building. The building is clad in random vertical metal panels in order to break up the mass of the penthouse. It is also set back from the edge so as not to compete with the existing architecture.

A seemingly haphazard façade rhythm is a fine-tuned response to the solid-void relationship of the existing windows and façade. There are set back from the main façade and solid-openable panels add to the relief and depth of the façade to father break up the mass of the Penthouse.

Currently on site, this Art Deco gem is hidden away in bustling Camden yet is a stone’s throw from the centre of town. The lower floors house creative agencies and the owner approached us to design a lightweight Penthouse atop the existing building. A new lift and entrance area were created to facilitate access to the new home - a 3-bedroomed stylish Penthouse with fantastic views from its elevated position.

By creative use of space, a hidden garden sits snugly between the new Penthouse (an “L” shape”) and the building behind. This secluded rooftop garden is a perfect suntrap and gives the living areas a spacious feel on what is a tight site.
