FOUR MODERN PENTHOUSES SIT ATOP A SIMPLE BRICK BLOCK OF FLATS

High Firs Penthouses is a remarkable achievement given the nature of the existing building - an aging and tired brick residential block. The scheme did not look at the Penthouses in isolation, it made sure the existing building was looked at too so as to seamlessly integrate the old with the new.

This project is an example of how the skill, tenacity and pure driven nature of the client can make things work, make things flourish and make things happen. Given the sensitivity of the site (on a prominent and elevated position in Radlett), planners, locals, residents and owners were obviously keen to see a scheme that was sensitive to its location yet still had that wow factor. The original building received new entrances whilst the old, tired balconies also received a makeover - both creating the visual link between the existing building and the 4 new homes atop.

Additionally, all the windows were replaced in order to further create the sense of unity between the old and the new. The colours are also muted to help the resultant buildings fit in with their position within the fir trees from which the scheme derives its name. As the project reached completion, former sceptics have come out the woodwork to compliment the scheme and applaud its positive contribution to the neighbourhood.

The penthouses are actually duplex apartments finished to an outstanding level of quality and detail. Each Penthouse has stunning views and each penthouse has a unique character of its own. We worked tirelessly with the client and Euan Rankine of Rankine (Ltd) in order to scene set each apartment in order to create this individual feel whilst maintaining the unity of the whole.

The 60’s feel of the original building was subtly played upon and hints of art deco with a contemporary feel is evident in the design. The Penthouses are accessed via the new entrances and refurbished internal areas of the original High Firs flats. Each Penthouse was also finished to their buyers individual specification, whether it be through an internal integrated lift or through the choice of fittings and finishes.
